How did Saivana do financially?
Due to tough COVID times and national lockdowns, it was a challenging year for Saivana Exports.
- Total sales declined by 22.6%.
- Due to hard cost trimming, operating costs declined and net profits rose by 32%.
- Quality claims were 0.35% of all shipments sent. This rose from 0.25% from the preceding year. This is a serious concern.
- Capital Investment increased as Saivana added a 6th factory, able to generate additional 1200 more jobs.
- Capital Investment increased as Saivana invested more in plant and machinery by adding 120 heads imported computer embroidery machines.
- Number of new buyers Saivana chose to work with increased by 2 only. Our focus remained on our core buyers and we declined to work with more than 40 new prospective buyers.
- Despite slowdown, Saivana did not cut any salaries of its employees unlike other exporters.
What did Saivana do for the environment?
- We mapped out our TOTAL CARBON FOOTPRINT like the preceding year ( Click here to view the complete report ). To our dismay, in 2019-2020 our carbon footprint increased due to local electricity breakdowns leading us to resort to extensively use generators.
- To offset our carbon footprint, we are pleased to inform that SAIVANA has become the FIRST GARMENT EXPORTER in India to become CARBON NEUTRAL ( Click here to view the complete report ). We cannot leave a sick planet for our next generation and this year we hope to become CARBON POSITIVE.
- Our buyers accelerated their use of ORGANIC FABRICS and compared to 30% of the previous year, 35% of Saivana productions in this year were in organic fabrics. This was quite challenging as there was a huge breakdown in the supply chain and traceability of organic fabrics. For every organic fabric SAIVANA used, we were able to provide 100% of their TRACEABILITY CERTIFICATES (means no fake organic fabrics were used).
- Saivana’s new factory is being installed with solar panels in order to generate little bit of electricity. If that is successful, it will be done across all factories.
- New electric cars were purchased and old diesel guzzling cars were phased out.
- Even though Saivana is using 100% biodegradable polybags, the search remains for even a better alternative to the existing polybags.
- Besides having GOTS and CEDEX certifications, Saivana also got a the tough WRAP certification for its main production unit. WRAP is the world’s largest independent certification program focused on the apparel, footwear, and sewn products sectors.
- Becoming a WRAP certified facility involves much more than simply passing an audit. It takes a collaborative approach to social compliance certification where they work with our facilities to ensure that we remain in compliance with our Principles of ethical manufacturing. In 2021-2022, we shall ensure all main production units of Saivana are fully WRAP certified.

What did Saivana do for its employees and local communities?
- COVID provided lot of challenges for Saivana employees. We created disinfectant tunnels, provided free masks and gloves to all and initiated strict distancing policies.
Disinfectant Tunnels
- Saivana used leftover fabrics and distributed masks to the local slums around its factories.
- Conducted eyesight camp and provided free spectacles to the employees who needed them.
- Saivana contributed handsomely to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. Basically, the Prime Minister relief fund helps poor people during national calamities and India always seems to have them, from floods to cyclones.
- Saivana’s involvement with the charity ROOM TO READ (which focuses on educating the GIRL CHILD) increased by direct financial contribution as well as by making 16 styles for a US based brand (total number of pieces – 1440), the proceeds of which went directly to the charity. Our partnership with the US brand for this noble venture remains a classic case of international collaboration to make a difference in the lives of the not so fortunate.
- Saivana accelerated its efforts to the help the PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY department of TATA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL in Mumbai. Poor people, whose babies are suffering from cancer, often leave them at the doorstep of the hospital, unable to bear the cost of the treatment. Saivana decided to help them much more in this financial year.
- Saivana has been helping the daughters of its own employees through its inhouse foundation “FREEDOM THROUGH EDUCATION” by providing financial help, books, uniforms, school fees etc.
- NOTE:- AS the COVID crises rages at the time of printing this report (early May 2021), Saivana will find a notable cause, especially to help orphaned children who have lost both their parents to COVID and collaborate with all its overseas partners to help those children.
- Saivana will always continue helping the needy in the town of Shirdi, Maharashtra which is the home of the patron saint Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi, after whom Saivana has been named.
